Have you ever been to Africa? How Covid-19 is affecting the continent?

Languages in Africa

On the African continent more than a thousand different languages are spoken, only in Nigeria, two hundred. In most former British colonies - Ghana, Gambia, Kenia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and South Africa - English is still the official language. In Nigeria, for example, although people speak two or more local languages, English is spoken in big cities for business, politics, and Universities. The country has expressive authors of great renown whose literature are world-famous Amos Tutuola, Chinua Achebe, and Wole Soyinka. In bookshops, there is a huge variety of English, Swahili, and Haussa (official language in the Northern provinces of Nigeria) publications. Swahili is a Bantu language widely spoken in Eastern Africa and for centuries has been the ' lingua franca ' of Africans. The name originates from the Arab word "Sawhill” which means ' from the coast '.

SOWETO

What does Soweto stand for?

Soweto means South Western Townships (Neighborhoods in the Southwest) is a city adjoining Johannesburg in South Africa, which was introduced in 1963, to join under the same administration of a set of neighborhoods for blacks. According to apartheid laws, blacks could not live-in areas reserved for whites; in addition to neighborhoods built to house black gold mine workers, some neighborhoods of black middle-class citizens have been incorporated into Soweto. In 1983, Soweto ceased to be part of the Johannesburg municipality, having the status of the city and its administration.

It became known at the time of apartheid for being the focus of anti-racist resistance and black protests against the official policy of racial discrimination.

Africa is known for its ethnic and cultural plurality, and, through ancient history, it can tell the story of all humanity - Nelson Mandela. (1918–2013) first president of post-Apartheid South Africa and joint Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Africa is one of the six continents in the world, being the third largest in territorial extension. The territory extends over more than 30 million km2, occupying approximately 20% of the Earth's continental area. Over a billion inhabitants live on the continent, making it the second-most populous of the rest.

Despite the continent's enormous wealth, many African countries have low levels of development, with diverse social problems besides the Covid-19 issue like us.

The African Union (AU) confirmed on Thursday (Jan 28th.) that it had acquired over 400 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine against covid-19, which will arrive through the Serum Institute of India between 2021 and 2022, and which will add to the 270 million already reserved by the organization for this year. "We are starting to see very good progress," said John Nkengasong, director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Africa (CDC Africa), at a virtual press conference.

We hope more vaccines arrive in Brazil so that we can return to our regular life and continue visiting amazing countries like Africa.

Unfortunately, African citizens like Brazilians are not allowed to enter the US due to the Coronavirus variants. Let's hope this gets resolved soon.
